Fifty
2026 is the year I turn fifty.
To commemorate this beautiful milestone, I created a 50-minute ambient/drone track.
I’ve wanted to create an ambient soundscape longer than 5 minutes for quite a while now, but I never had the inspiration or, more truthfully, the patience to work on such a long track.
I got the idea for this one after reaching another personal milestone: fifty OneChord Shorts uploaded to YouTube!
Listening to the shorts on a playlist I had created, I realised I had the content all ready to go; I just needed to sculpt them somehow.
Reaching for my knapsack and digging out the trusty Tascam DR-60DMKII, I headed out across the meadow to capture 40 minutes (my battery died) of spring bird song and woodland atmosphere.
While recording, I sat on a moss-covered log, watching some ducks glide down the River Blackwater. The air was clean, and the bright morning sun broke through the bare spring branches, warming my cheeks. It was bliss!

I produced a slow drone using fifty chords, mirroring the morning’s ambience, by layering them over the recording.
If you close your eyes while listening, your surroundings will vanish into a lush green woodland clearing as you meander from one chord to another.
It’s the first track I have made that doesn’t really get in the way. It’s ideal for bedtime; you can even count the chords as you float down the river. I bet you can’t get to fifty!
I’m dedicating this track to my mum, who brought me into this amazing world fifty years ago and has been there for me ever since.
I love you, Mum! ❤️
